General Industrial Automation

Practical basics for selecting and applying industrial automation products.

Industrial automation uses control equipment and software to operate machines and processes with less manual intervention. Typical systems combine motor control, logic control, operator interfaces, power supplies, sensors and communication networks.

Common industrial automation products include Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for motor speed control, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for machine logic, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for operator control and monitoring, and industrial SMPS units for regulated DC power.

Start with the application requirement, load or motor data, supply voltage, required I/O, control method, communication protocol, enclosure conditions and available panel space. For machine-specific selection, share your application and electrical requirements with our technical sales team before ordering.

We support OEMs, panel builders and system integrators with product selection and industrial automation requirements. For project-specific scope, quantities or integration support, please contact our sales team with your application details.

VFD & Variable Frequency Drives

Selection, application, operation and Delta VFD technical questions.

A Variable Frequency Drive, or VFD, controls an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. It is commonly used when an application needs adjustable motor speed, controlled acceleration or deceleration, process control or improved energy efficiency.

A correctly selected VFD can provide controlled starting and stopping, adjustable motor speed, process control, reduced mechanical stress and potential energy savings in suitable variable-torque applications such as fans and pumps.

Select a VFD using the motor nameplate voltage, full-load current, power rating, supply phase and voltage, application duty, overload requirement, speed range, control method and environmental conditions. Motor current and application duty are especially important; do not select only by kW or HP.

Useful information includes motor kW or HP, motor rated current, motor voltage, available input supply, application type, required speed range, starting torque, overload duty, braking requirement, communication needs, cable length and installation environment.

HD means Heavy Duty and ND means Normal Duty. They are different operating ratings with different allowable output current and overload capability. Use the duty rating that matches the actual load profile and always check the exact model rating table before selection.

VFDs are commonly used on pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers, machine tools, process equipment and other motor-driven machinery where controlled speed, torque, starting or stopping is required. Suitability depends on the motor and application.

Common causes include overcurrent, overload, overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating, motor or cable faults, incorrect parameters, rapid acceleration or deceleration, and unsuitable load conditions. Record the fault code and correct the underlying cause before resetting the drive.

The biggest energy-saving opportunities are usually on variable-torque loads such as fans and pumps, where reducing motor speed can significantly reduce power demand. Actual savings depend on the process, duty cycle, motor, control strategy and operating speed.

MS300 and ME300 are compact Delta VFD families aimed at machine and general industrial applications, but their feature sets, I/O, safety functions, communication options, filters and available ratings differ. Compare the exact model datasheets and application requirements before substituting one series for the other.

The exact procedure depends on the VFD series. In general, set the frequency command source to the keypad or operator panel as described in that model's manual, then adjust the frequency reference with the keypad controls. Confirm the run-command source and motor limits before operating the machine.

Some Delta VFD series support both induction motors and permanent-magnet motors, but supported motor types and control modes vary by series and model. Check the exact VFD manual and motor data before commissioning.

MH300 overload capability depends on the selected duty rating and exact model. Check the Heavy Duty or Normal Duty rating table for the model you are considering and verify both continuous output current and permitted overload duration against the machine load.

Many Delta VFDs, including the MS300 range, support RS-485 and Modbus communication. Other industrial networks may require a specific series or option card, so confirm the communication interface for the exact VFD model before ordering.

Certification and compliance can vary by VFD series, model, voltage class and market. If CE, UL, RoHS or another approval is mandatory for your project, check the exact model documentation or contact our sales team for the required compliance information before purchase.

Use only the braking terminals, resistor value, power rating and wiring method specified in the manual for the exact VFD model. Some drives include a braking chopper while others may require additional hardware. Braking circuits involve hazardous DC-bus voltage, so wiring should be carried out by qualified personnel with power isolated and discharge time observed.

The MS300 models currently listed on DeltaVFD.com are specified as IP20 / UL Open Type. They are intended for suitable enclosure or panel installation where the required environmental protection is provided.

A VFD can be used with a compatible three-phase pump motor when the drive voltage class, output current, motor data and application requirements match. Also check cable length, motor insulation, earthing, protection and the pump manufacturer's VFD guidance before selection.

First identify and remove the cause of the fault. Then use the reset method specified for that VFD series, such as the keypad reset function, an assigned digital input or a permitted power cycle. Repeatedly resetting a drive without fixing the cause can damage equipment or create an unsafe condition.

PLC

PLC basics, selection and industrial communication.

A Programmable Logic Controller, or PLC, is an industrial controller designed to read inputs, execute programmed logic and control outputs. It is widely used for reliable machine sequencing, interlocking, timing, counting and process control.

PLCs are used in packaging machines, conveyors, material handling, process plants, utilities, assembly machines, pumping systems and many other industrial applications that require repeatable logic and control.

Define the required digital and analog I/O, high-speed functions, communication ports and protocols, program size, expansion needs, motion requirements, power supply and environmental conditions. Leave reasonable spare I/O and expansion capacity for future changes.

Relay control uses physical relays and hard-wired logic, while a PLC implements most control logic in software. PLCs usually make complex sequencing, timers, counters, diagnostics and future changes easier, while simple relay circuits can still be suitable for small fixed functions.

Yes. PLCs can communicate with devices such as VFDs, HMIs, remote I/O, meters and other controllers when compatible physical interfaces and protocols are available. Always confirm protocol support and port requirements for each device.

HMI

Operator-interface basics, communication and selection.

An HMI, or Human Machine Interface, is an operator interface used to display machine information and allow users to interact with an automation system. It can show status, alarms, process values, trends and operator controls.

An HMI gives operators a clear way to monitor and control a machine or process. It can reduce the number of physical indicators and switches while providing organized status, alarm and setpoint information.

An HMI communicates with a PLC through a supported communication link and protocol, such as serial or Ethernet-based industrial communication. The HMI is configured to read and write PLC tags or registers using the correct device driver and network settings.

Consider screen size and resolution, touch interface, required communication ports and protocols, environmental rating, available mounting space, data logging or recipe needs, and compatibility with the PLC or controller used in the machine.

SMPS

Industrial power-supply selection and application basics.

An industrial Switched Mode Power Supply, or SMPS, converts an input supply into a regulated DC output for control equipment. It is commonly used to power PLCs, HMIs, sensors, relays and other low-voltage devices inside control panels.

Match the required input supply and DC output voltage, then calculate the total load current or power required by the connected devices. Include sensible design margin and check installation, temperature, derating, protection and mounting requirements in the product documentation.

Check the permitted AC or DC input range, output voltage, rated output current or power, adjustment range if applicable, efficiency, protection features, operating temperature, derating requirements and connection or mounting method.

Industrial SMPS units are commonly used in control panels, machine control systems, PLC and HMI circuits, instrumentation, sensors, relays and other automation equipment that requires a stable DC supply.
